A Case Familial Polyposis of the Colon

Abstract
This is a case report of 41-year-old Korean female who had a familial polyposis of the colon with malignant change. Her chief complaints were at first frequent defecations and then bloody diarrhea with intermittent lower abdominal cramps.
Proctosigmoidoscopic examination and double contrast air barium studies revealed the multiple polyps throughout the all mucosa of thee rectum and colon. There was an ulcerating mass in the rectum: Search for her family tree showed the hereditary back ground of the familial polyposis on her parent side.
She underwent a total colectomy and abdominoperineal resection with a permanent ileostomy.
Familial polyposis has a marked tendency to undergo malignant change of polyps
Therefore once the diagnosis is made either total colectomy with a permanent ileostomy or subtotal colectomy with ileoproctostomy should be done as preventive measures.
A case of familial polyposis of the colon is presented with a brief- review of literature.
